Known as The "Purple Book". Revisions include new provisions for the allocation of hazard statements and for the labelling of small packagings, two new sub-categories for respiratory and skin sensitization, the revision of the classification criteria for long-term hazards (chronic toxicity) to the aquatic environment, and a new hazard class for substances and mixtures hazardous to the ozone layer.
When implemented, the GHS will:
Enhance the protection of human health and the environment by providing an internationally comprehensible system for hazard communication; provide a recognised framework for those countries without an existing system;
reduce the need for testing and evalutation of chemicals; and
facilitate international trade in chemicals whose hazards have been properly assessed and identified on an international basis
